Today’s AZC News Round-Up: Municipalities Face Continued Pressure to Provide Asylum Reception Places

Today’s asylum news focuses on the continued pressure on Dutch municipalities to meet their responsibilities for asylum reception under the Distribution Act.

The municipality of Bronckhorst has recently been added to the list of municipalities that, according to the Ministry of Asylum and Migration, are not meeting their reception obligations. The municipality says it will discuss the situation with the ministry after the summer.

Across the Netherlands, some municipalities are also introducing conditions regarding which asylum seekers they are willing to accommodate. Experts have raised questions about the legal basis of these conditions and whether they could lead to unequal treatment between asylum seekers.

Several municipalities continue working on reception and housing solutions:

  • Haarlem: The municipality continues operating several reception locations together with the COA for asylum seekers, refugees and recognised refugees. Updated information has been published about locations including the Meesterlottelaan and Dreef reception centres.
  • Vught: The municipality remains under attention because it has not yet created asylum reception places. The Ministry has criticised Vught for not meeting its responsibilities under the Distribution Act.
  • Alblasserdam: The municipality has successfully met its legal obligation to house recognised refugees. As a result, provincial intervention is no longer needed. The municipality is also exploring shared housing options for single recognised refugees.

Meanwhile, there are currently no reliable new reports of serious incidents, overcrowding or people sleeping outside at the Ter Apel registration centre. Therefore, no older developments are being presented as new events.

Across the Netherlands, discussions continue about finding a balance between the national need for sufficient reception capacity, local support and the responsibilities of municipalities.
