The EU reaches agreement on the distribution of asylum seekers
EU Ministers of Asylum and Migration have reached a political agreement on the distribution of asylum seekers across the EU, known as the solidarity pool. This annual agreement specifies which countries are required to take in asylum seekers from countries unable to manage the influx. In 2026, 21,000 asylum seekers are to be redistributed, as agreed. Countries can also opt to pay for this redistribution, at a rate of €20,000 per asylum seeker. According to De Telegraaf, this means that the Netherlands will need to take in 1,095 asylum seekers from Southern European countries. The caretaker government has chosen to pay for this obligation instead. After intense negotiations, it was agreed to distribute just 21,000 migrants across the EU bloc for this first round. This outcome means the Netherlands will take in about 550 fewer migrants, saving millions of euros in the process.
Caretaker Minister David van Weel expressed satisfaction that a decision had been made, as previous talks had been delayed and there had been significant back-and-forth negotiations. “This is a very important part of the EU migration pact,” Van Weel said after the meeting in Brussels.
