Latest AZC News: Protests in Surhuisterveen and Arrests After Vandalism in Engelen and Bokhoven

Today’s asylum news focuses on rising tensions around asylum reception in several Dutch communities.

In Surhuisterveen, tensions increased after dozens of protesters tried to stop a bus carrying 28 asylum seekers to a temporary night shelter. The municipality decided to deploy riot police after concerns that the situation was escalating. Some protesters threw nails onto the road, but no fights or arrests were reported.

The mayor of Achtkarspelen said it was unfortunate that police intervention was needed to ensure asylum seekers could safely reach their sleeping location. According to the mayor, the disruption was caused by the protest actions and not by the asylum seekers.

Meanwhile, two people from Den Bosch have been arrested in connection with vandalism and graffiti targeting homes in Engelen and Bokhoven. The affected homes mainly belonged to residents who supported or had a neutral position towards the planned reception centre for unaccompanied minor asylum seekers.

Mayor Jack Mikkers of Den Bosch said intimidation and violence should never determine the future of asylum reception plans. Authorities say the incidents show increasing tensions surrounding the national asylum debate.

Across the Netherlands, several municipalities remain under pressure to meet their responsibilities under the Asylum Distribution Act.

  • Bronckhorst: The municipality remains under attention from the Ministry because it has not yet created enough reception places.
  • Oldenzaal: The municipality is also receiving attention for not meeting its reception obligations.
  • Diemen: The COA has started legal proceedings against squatters occupying a building planned to become an asylum centre for around 160 people.

Despite the challenges, positive developments continue. The upcoming Open AZC Day will give local residents the opportunity to visit reception locations, meet asylum seekers and learn more about daily life in asylum centres. The initiative aims to create more understanding, dialogue and connection between residents and newcomers.
