Be carefull with fireworks december 2025

In the Netherlands, it’s a tradition to celebrate New Year’s Eve with fireworks and oliebollen (a deep-fried dough treat). This custom has been around for a very long time. Exactly at midnight, people set off fireworks to mark the end of the old year and the beginning of the new one. This celebration is called “Oud en Nieuw” in Dutch.

The fireworks create loud bangs, smoke, and light. This can be a little scary at times, but when handled safely, it’s a beautiful spectacle to watch.

Fireworks Regulations

Fireworks can be dangerous, which is why there are strict regulations regarding the possession and use of fireworks:

You can only buy fireworks on December 29, 30, and 31 at official fireworks sales points. These are shops authorized by the municipality to sell fireworks.
You are not allowed to have fireworks outside these dates.
Fireworks can only be set off between 6:00 PM on December 31 and 2:00 AM on January 1. The police strictly monitor this.
Illegal fireworks are prohibited. They are dangerous because they have not been tested. Fireworks are considered illegal if they are not sold at an official sales point on the designated sales days in the Netherlands.
Municipalities can ban fireworks in certain areas. No one is allowed to set off fireworks there.
If you violate these regulations, you could receive a fine of at least €100.
