AZC NEWS: Minister Visits Engelen as Discussions Continue Over New Reception Centre

Today’s asylum news focuses on the ongoing discussions about asylum reception in Engelen, where tensions remain high following recent incidents involving vandalism and intimidation.

Minister of Asylum and Migration Bart van den Brink and Den Bosch councilor Pieter Paul Slikker visited Engelen on Wednesday to speak with residents about the planned reception centre for unaccompanied minor refugees.

During a small community meeting, residents had the opportunity to share their concerns and ask questions. Councilor Slikker said the meeting was open and constructive. He also emphasised that municipalities need support from the national government to deal with the challenges surrounding asylum reception.

Despite recent arrests linked to vandalism and intimidation, tensions in Engelen remain. The municipality of Den Bosch has started removing protest banners near the planned reception location following new rules regarding public expressions. Some residents who disagree with the removal were present during the operation.

Meanwhile, political attention on asylum reception continues. PVV leader Geert Wilders announced that he will visit Nuenen on 29 August because of the planned temporary asylum centre in the village. The location is expected to open on 8 September and will provide space for around 159 asylum seekers.

Across the Netherlands, municipalities continue discussing their responsibilities under the Asylum Distribution Act.
